In short

A 5-star in a converted Amsterdam landmark, next to the Van Gogh Museum, with a spa and pool guests keep bringing up.

Best for / Tips to get it right

Best for

  • Design lovers: reviews keep returning to the original brick meeting the glass atrium, and the contrast between the old shell and the modern interiors. If you book a hotel for the building, this is one of the few in Amsterdam where the building is the point.
  • Spa and recovery trips: 10 of 46 reviews mention the Akasha Spa, the indoor pool and the sauna. It is the amenity that separates this hotel from the other 5-stars nearby.
  • Couples on a getaway: the Museum Quarter location means you can walk to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the canals without a taxi. Multiple reviews flag the concierge as the fastest way to book restaurants and museum slots.
  • Food lovers: the on-site restaurant and the afternoon tea in the lounge both get named in reviews. Guests mention dinner service and the Ottolenghi spot separately, which means the food is a reason to stay in, not just an add-on.

Tips to get it right

  • Ask for a room on a lower floor or a corner if steep internal stairs bother you. Several reviews mention duplex layouts, and those rooms have stairs between the bedroom and the bathroom.
  • If you want a quiet coffee before a concert or a museum slot, order it at the lounge 20 minutes early. Multiple guests mention slow service at the lobby bar at peak times.
  • Book your spa slot before arrival. Guests say the pool and sauna area is small, and 10 of 46 reviews bring up the spa, so peak hours fill up.
  • Check whether breakfast is included in the rate you are choosing. Reviews are mixed on whether it came with the booking, and it is a separate charge on most fares.

Why this one

The Mandarin Oriental Conservatorium sits across the street from the Van Gogh Museum and a short walk from the Rijksmuseum. In the 46 reviews we read, the staff came up in 17 of them, the location in 11, and the spa in 10. Those three words show up more than any other. The building itself, a former music school with a glass-covered atrium, is mentioned in review after review before anyone talks about the rooms.

What guests keep saying

Staff is the top signal, named in 17 of 46 reviews, about 37 percent. The line that repeats is some version of "beautiful hotel with friendly staff," and a long thank-you note to the front desk team shows up in the sample. Location lands in 11 reviews, around 24 percent, mostly for the Museum Quarter address and the walk to the canals. One guest sums it up as "excellent staff, room, restaurants, location."

The bit the hotel does not tell you

The lobby atrium is the thing everyone photographs, and it is also where most of the walking happens. If you book a duplex, you will go up and down stairs to get coffee or get dressed. If you would rather not, ask for a single-level room at booking. The gym shows up in a couple of reviews as very well equipped, which is not something most 5-stars in this city can say. The pool area is small enough that timing matters, so aim for opening or late afternoon if you want a seat.

Persona 03

Couples on a getaway

Marta and Iñigo, 38 and 40, first trip without the kids

The Museum Quarter address means they can walk to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum and be back for dinner. The concierge gets named in reviews for booking restaurants, which is the part they never plan themselves.
